Sock Care

Wash them the way we do and they last for years.

You found this page by scanning your sock band.  Here is how to wash your Finnsheep wool socks, and how to tell us how they wear.

01 · Why wool asks for less

Good wool needs washing far less than you think.

Every pair of Farm to Foot socks starts with a lamb on our hillside in Bangall, New York.  Finnsheep fleece is fine, lustrous and springy, with low lanolin — that is what gives the sock its soft hand and its long wear.

Wool also resists odor and wicks moisture away from the skin, so a pair worn all day does not need the wash a cotton sock would.  Air them out overnight and most days that is enough.

When they do need washing, wool asks for three things: a non-abrasive wool wash, cool water, and a line to dry on.

02 · Wash it right

Three steps, in this order.

Hand washing is the gold standard for a reason — it is the gentlest way to clean a knit.  Machine washing can be acceptable when performed under proper conditions, and when it is, these are the conditions.

01

Hand wash — the gold standard

Hand washing with a non-abrasive wool wash is the gold standard.  Fill a basin with cool water, work in a small amount of wool wash, and let the socks soak for a few minutes.  Rinse in cool water, press the water out — never wring — and line dry.

02

Machine wash — under proper conditions

Machine washing can be acceptable when performed under proper conditions: cold water, gentle cycle, wool wash — and always line dry.

03

Line dry, always

Lay them flat or hang them to dry, away from direct heat and sunlight.  A tumble dryer shrinks and felts the knit, so it stays out of the routine.

03 · What stays out

Four things a wool sock never needs.

Bleach and fabric softener

Both strip wool of the softness you bought it for.

Hot water

Wool is washed cool.  Heat is what shrinks a knit.

The tumble dryer

Drying is line dry only — flat or hung, never tumbling.

Washing too often

Wool resists odor on its own.  Air your socks out between wears and wash them far less often than cotton.

04 · The wash we use

Unscented, concentrated, made for fiber.

We wash our own Finnsheep wool with Unicorn's fibre care — unscented, earth friendly and free of enzymes, dyes, phosphates, fillers and irritants.  A little goes a long way, which is why each 4 oz bottle lasts longer than it looks.
