Washing Point of View Farm Sheepskins
Hides are tanned to be washable.
Machine or hand wash (we strongly suggest hand washing for the sake of your washing machine as well as the sheepskin) in cold or warm water — do not exceed 100 degrees. We recommend the use of Kookaburra or Eucalan wool wash; you can find these products online. Please do not use Woolite, laundry detergents or fabric softeners.
Hand washing
Put the sheepskin in the tub and hold it under the water until it is thoroughly saturated. Gently churn the skin to get the soap moving around the wool and let it soak 5–10 minutes, then rinse. Gently squeeze out extra water.
Machine washing
Set to the gentle cycle. Once the skin is thoroughly soaked, allow the machine to churn briefly — the more churning, the more the wool will mat. Let soak 5–10 minutes. Spin briefly to remove excess water. Rinse if necessary.
Drying
Never tumble dry — heat will damage the sheepskin, resulting in shrinking and hardening of the leather, and will mat the wool. Line dry (not in the sun) or dry flat, wool side down, and stretch to shape while damp. Brush with a soft wire brush when wet, when damp and when dry.
We do not guarantee the sheepskins through washing, but we have had good results following the methods above.
