This is a beautiful hand dyed Point of View Farm Finnsheep roving. I named this colorway ‘Jorma’. Jorma was the lamb that grew this fleece. I have this one bag and another that is 3.4 oz. I’m making the lighter bag available to whomever purchases this one so if you want it just let me know and I can invoice you accordingly. Purples are so much fun to dye as there are so many dyes and combinations you can use to achieve them. This colorway has not of dimension and depth t0 it thanks to all those dye layers. I used fuschia to make this purple….that is why it is so bright. Reminds me of an early 1980’s puffy jacket I had.
The roving all happens right here at Point of View Farm from raising the sheep, shearing, skirting and skirting the wool, washing, dyeing, picking open the locks and carding on our Brother Super Card. The roving is drawn off by hand using a diz.
If that sounds like a lot, it is. So, why did we transition to on farm made roving when we could send the wool to a mill? We like to do all the processing ourselves. We are gentle with it. We also like to dye wool prior to carding and then create subtle variations and pops of color which can only be achieved with a hands on method. That means you have more color variety to choose from. It also means the dye lots are smaller (because my dye pots are only so large).
So what exactly is to Dye For Roving? It is the complete ‘on farm’ method for preparing wool that I use to hand spin the award winning signature textured yarns. This preparation is now available to you to spin, felt and create with too. I think you are going to love this.
The ‘To Dye For’ wool is gently processed on the farm to maintain it’s natural integrity and structure. It contains different grades and lengths of finnsheep wool that are integral to my textured yarn approach to spinning. In most cases, this is not the roving for a perfectly even ‘looks like it was commercially spun’ yarn like you would make from combed top. It feels very much alive, springy and is fun to spin because it drafts easily. This is how I prepare fibers for my own spinning.
Full debrief. You may find tiny bits of grass the sheep pick up from their hillside pastures mixed in here and there. We take great care to remove nearly all of that. We are not perfect and some sheep are messier than others so occasionally something sneaks by. We feel it does not detract from the beauty, depth and dimension this 100% hand prepared product offers.
Each quantity is 4 ounces. If you order contains more than 4 ounces, we will package the roving into a single bag for you.
Enjoy!
