This is Molly’s 2021 Raw Fleece. Molly is a purebred finnsheep that was coated/ jacketed most of the year. Her fleece is very low on VM (vegetable matter- hay, straw, grass from the pasture)….so low in fact I would call it no vm. I’m a hand spinner, shepherd and certified wool classer and really enjoyed skirting this one. I get a little ruthless about skirting and removing all wool that has VM in it so you are only getting nice wool with Point of View Farm fleeces, not a bag full of wool straw and hay. It weighs 2 pounds 11.3 ounces.
Raw fleece means it has not been washed yet so it will smell like a sheep and need washing either before or after spinning. The fleece was carefully and professionally shorn off Molly in a single piece New Zealand style by a shearer who takes pride in his work (and knows what he is doing). This shearer has shorn award winning fleeces at Rhinebeck and Maryland Fleece show and sales for many years for our farm and others. You will not be disappointed in his careful work. I then carefully skirt it at shearing and again at a later date when I have nmore time. I have usually spent at least an hour preparing a fleece for sale or show.
Molly was born at Point of View Farm in 2019. She is turning out to be quite a nice addition. We love her dark brown crimpy wool that is silvering a bit as she ages. That quality just makes it sing in the sunlight. She one of the rarer (double recessive) brown finnsheep sheep born in the US and helped add genetic diversity in the Point of View Farm flock. Her dam is Sapphire, now retired to be a pet here and her sire is Rockstar…who was literally that. What a Nice combination of bloodlines this ewe is.
Finnsheep fleece takes dye like a dream and would also blend beautifully with other wools where you want to add luster and drape to a different type of wool.
