This is Carshena’s 2022 Raw Fleece. Carshena is a purebred finnsheep fleece that was coated/ jacketed most of the year. Her fleece is very low on VM (vegetable matter- hay, straw, grass from the pasture). I skirted it myself. I’m a hand spinner as well as a shepherd. I dislike VM as much as the next spinner. I get a little ruthless about skirting and removing all wool that has VM in it so you are only getting nice wool with this one. It weighs 3 pounds 6.9 ounces. That is a heavy fleece considering I skirted a bunch off. Carshena’s fleece is really soft. The handle on this one is really special. As a lamb her fleece took first place at Maryland Sheep and Wool. Her wool is that good!!
Raw fleece means it has not been washed yet so it will smell like a sheep and need washing either before or after spinning. The fleece was carefully and professionally shorn off Mocha in a single piece New Zealand style by a shearer who takes pride in his work (and knows what he is doing). This shearer has shorn award winning fleeces at Rhinebeck and Maryland Fleece show and sales for many years for our farm and others.
Carshena was born at Point of View Farm in 2016. We love her curly fleece that has loads of shine and curls. She one of the rarer (double recessive) silvering brown based finnsheep sheep born in the US. Mocha is another one. Silvering is really special quality as the fleece really shines and reflects light as well as being colorful. The crimp and lock definition is really special. Last year I held her fleece back to show at the county fair where it was in the ribbons. This year I am listing it early since I just know this summer will be busy and I will likely bee too busy to do much knitting. Did you know we have bees on the farm too? We do! We harvest the hives, generally, in June and July. There is just a little 2021 raw honey on the shelves. If you would like some, check out the grocery category of our webshop.
This fleece would take dye like a dream. The silvering would add so much depth and dimension. Of course, it is beautiful as it is. Basically, you can’t go wrong with this one.
