This is Pi’s 2021 Raw Fleece. Pi is a purebred white finnsheep that was coated/ jacketed most of the year. Her fleece is very low on VM (vegetable matter- hay, straw, grass from the pasture). I have been serious and a little ruthless about skirting and removing all wool that has VM in it so you are only getting nice wool with Point of View farm fleeces (more on that later). I hand pick over every fleece at least twice (once at shearing and then at a later date when I can spend up to an hour preparing them for sale or show). It weighs 2 pounds 1.4 ounces.
Raw fleece means it has not been washed yet so it will smell like a sheep and need washing either before or after spinning. The fleece was carefully and professionally shorn off Pi in a single piece in April 2021 New Zealand style by a shearer who takes pride in his work (and knows what he is doing). This shearer has shorn award winning fleeces at Rhinebeck and Maryland Fleece show and sales for many years for our farm and others. While I have never shown any of Pi’s fleeces, this is a show quality fleece. I’d be keeping it to show if I thought there might be any shows in 2021. I don’t think there will be….at least not for spring or summer for us. Pi’s dam, Betula was a fleece award winner at Maryland sheep and wool and also the Dutchess County fair in past years.
This fleece is a full years growth of wool from Pi. I probably removed over 1/2 her fleece weight in skirting this year. That is the ruthless skirter that I am. It is perfect for spinning, carding, combing or felting that is so low on VM, you are gonna love this fleece. It full of luster (shine) and has perfect length to create all kinds of yarn styles.
Finnsheep fleece takes dye like a dream and will also blend beautifully with other wools where you want to add luster and drape. If you have followed our farm you may remember that Pi was born in 2019. She was sooooo tiny and her eyes were still closed. We stayed up with her and visited the barn often to make sure she was safe, warm and well fed. She bonded with Sten and then followed his voice everywhere…and still does. All he has to do is call her name and she comes running to see him. Her fleece is a beauty. Nice crimp and even some little purly locks mixed in there.
