Handmade Horse Head Vase. This was started back in 2002 BUT, fired and finished in 2020. Talk about a long work in progress!
Kintsugi (金継ぎ, “golden joinery”), is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by visibly mending areas with gold rather than trying to conceal the imperfection. In this case I mixed powdered gold with epoxy. This piece was never actually broken. It is just that the horse head, which I made from a rough mold I made separated in firing leaving a tiny gap between in one of them. It was fine as it was but, with the gold it is so much better. The Japanese think so too and treasure Kintsugi pieces.
Measures 7″ tall and the widest point is 11″ where you measure from nose to nose across it. Glazed in French Blue, a food safe glaze. This piece will hold liquid.
